November 2002 Richmond Hill Post Article

I feel like I live next door to a parking lot! That’s what constituents often say when they call to complain about front yard parking in Richmond Hill.

A number of years ago, the Town stopped enforcing by-laws which prohibited front yard parking because of inconsistencies in these by-laws from one part of Town to another. There is not a single Town-wide by-law in place which deals with this matter and consequently enforcement became difficult if not impossible.

Many residents are dismayed that their neighbourhoods are becoming rundown as cars proliferate on front lawns and boulevards in both the older as well as newer areas of Town. Others complain that front yards are becoming storage sites for materials, recreational vehicles, as well as automobiles. Still others complain when front yards are covered with asphalt or interlocking stones.

On the other hand, Councillors receive complaints from residents who have more vehicles than they have space for in their driveways and garages and who receive parking tickets for parking on the streets.

Council has directed staff to prepare a report offering solutions to this growing problem. This Fall, a public meeting will be held at which residents can voice their concerns and help formulate a policy which is fair and yet promotes respect for neighbours and their property.

Watch for notice of this meeting and make sure your Councillor knows how you feel.
