Spring is here (I think) and that means the golf season is finally underway; which is my lead in to one of the very best charity fundraisers around - namely the Mayor's Charity Golf Tournament.

Ten years ago, Mayor Bill Bell agreed to lend his name to a fledgling event to raise money for local charities. In its inaugural year, the organizing committee was buoyed by the results when $15,000 was raised for charity.

In the ensuing years the tournament has grown in popularity and support and this year to celebrate our 10th Anniversary, the target is $75,000! Once all this years proceeds are calculated, the Mayor's Charity Golf Tournament will have directed $450,000 towards local charities making it one of the most successful local tournaments in Southern Ontario.

Some of the past recipients include the York Central Hospital Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, Hill House Hospice, Hospice Richmond Hill, CNIB York Region and the S'port for Kids Foundation.

This year we are proud to announce that Pathways for Youth, Big Brothers of York Region and the Canadian Spinal Research Organization will be the worthy recipients of the proceeds of the tournament.

So how does a golf tournament raise so much money for worthy charities located in and around Richmond Hill? It starts with our partners in the event; the Royal Bank Financial Group and the Richmond Hill Golf Club. It continues with literally hundreds of local businesses who provide sponsorships and donations of prizes. And it concludes with loyal golfers who readily participate in a fun day of camaraderie and good fellowship with a common purpose of helping worthy causes.

This year the Mayor's Charity Golf Tournament will be held at the Richmond Hill Golf Club on Monday, June 23rd. There are still sponsorship opportunities available. If you would like to know more, please give me a call.

Fore!
