The Town of Richmond Hill, as part of its continuing program to improve municipal infrastructure, will be replacing the existing watermain, installing a storm sewer and reconstructing Newkirk Road to an urban standard from Major Mackenzie Drive North to Elgin Mills Road.
Construction began in late April 2001 with substantial completion expected by November of this year.
The existing watermain will be replaced, including the disconnection and reconnection of existing services and the replacement of hydrants. New storm sewers will be constructed, thus eliminating the need for ditches.
The road will be upgraded from two lanes to multiple lanes including continuous curbs and sidewalks on both sides of the roadway from Major Mackenzie Drive to Elgin Mills Road.
During construction, traffic restrictions will be unavoidable. These may include, but are not limited to, reduced lane widths or single lane traffic and reduced driveway access or interruptions. A temporary road closure is planned for Crosby Avenue, west of Newkirk Road and for parts of Newkirk Road itself to accommodate certain aspects of the construction.
Newkirk Road carries a great deal of traffic as it is a prime route for commuters from the north to travel to the GO Station each day. It also experiences heavy vehicle traffic from various industries located the length of the road.
Once completed the flow of traffic will be greatly improved and it is hoped that this will lessen the impact of this traffic on neighbouring residential streets.
Next year, to complement this major road and service reconstruction, improvements will be made to the entrance to Newkirk Road at Elgin Mills Road and to Newkirk Park from Crosby Avenue to its northern limit. Finally, improved lighting and streetscaping will complete the project.
